Outreach Coordinator
The Rural Development Center: The Rural Development Center (RDC) is a
community based agricultural training and resource center serving
farmworkers and family farmers in the Salinas Valley. We promote
self-reliance by helping aspiring/established familyfarmers gain the
skills and experience they need to initiate/enhance their own agricultural
operations and improve their economic condition. RDC staff are bilingual
and most educational activities are conducted in Spanish.
Our programs include: (1) A Small Farm Education Program, a five-month
intensive education and training program on small farm production and
management, with a strong emphasis on sustainable practices; (2) Training
and technical assistance in sustainable practices to family farmers-in
-training on the RDC property; (3) Outreach, training and technical
support to established Latino farmers in the region, to address pollution
prevention and environmental justice issues; and (4) a Food Security
Project to provide low-income people in the region gain access to
affordable fresh organic vegetables, partly through the creation of a
farmers market, community gardens, Community Supported Agriculture
initiatives and a Youth Project.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Center Director, the Outreach Coordinator
will direct outreach, training and technical assistance to
Spanish-speaking family farmers in the region, to help them adopt more
sustainable and environmentally-safe practices in their farming; to
improve their production skills; to increase their marketing options; and
to enhance their ability to access financing. The coordinator will
develop and maintain demonstration plots; will manage a public education
campaign through the media and organized events, such as field days; will
conceptualize and implement long-term and mid-term plans consistent with
the organization's mission; and will work closely with other staff to
strengthen and enhance the work of the RDC.
Qualifications
· excellent written and oral communication skills in both Spanish and
English;
· familiarity with the condition and culture of the farmworker and family
farmer families, and experience in working with these constituencies is
highly desirable;
· strong practical experience, knowledge and understanding of sustainable
agriculture, farming practices, and related research;
· a good understanding of environmental safety issues as they relate to
agricultural practices, and demonstrated ability to develop a quality
outreach education program for family farmers and their communities;
· ability to develop relationships and resources to support the project
and the organization's work;
· fundraising and grantwriting experience is desirable;
· flexibility and willingness to perform diverse tasks is required;
· willingness to work on a varying schedule (e.g. evening and weekend
classes, meetings and events);
· willingness and ability to travel.
