Vermiculture usually referrs to the growing of worms for sale.
VermiComposting is the term used for composting of food wastes using worms.
Yes, most of the technology for vermicomposting is coming out of Canada,
Australia also. But, there is a good deal of it going on in the USA also.
Portland Metro, the regional government of Portland, WA. has tested a 2,000
POUND per DAY Vermicomposting machine, and is working on a 20,000 lbs. per
DAY model for their waste management. NYC has some very small programs at
the 4 Botanical Gardens for promoting vermicomposting in apartments in home
worm bins.
Overall, composting in the NY of municipal solid waste (MSW(, food waste,
is an uphill battle. This is primarilly because most Americans DO NOT PAY
to throw away their garbage and so have NO reason to divert it from
standard disposal except the environmental one. Economics rule in America,
so when we have an economic reason to compost our 20% - 25% of the MSW
waste stream, in NYC alone this is a min. of 3,800,000 POUND per DAY of
food waste alone, we will . Until then it will pretty much be disposal as
usual.
