Wanted: Experienced Apprentice/Working Partner for the 1998 season
If you:
have at least a year's experience doing the physical work on a market farm,
are serious about having your own small-scale, organic produce operation
someday,
are willing to learn "how it's done here," but contribute knowledge and ideas,
are comfortable with, and able to work independently, as well as part of a
team,
have the maturity to help do what it takes to get the crops in and to
market, and still spend time picking our brains
consider spending a season with Full Circle Organic Farm. Located in the
Sierra foothills about 45 miles NE of Sacramento, CA., Full Circle is a
micro-farm growing vegetables, herbs, strawberries, and flowers using
biointensive, organic practices in a whole ecosystem approach. We have a
50 family CSA and attend farmers market. Computers play a major role in
our planning, tracking, and marketing functions. Our biggest challenge is
having enough hands to get the work done with limited capital. Like most
small-scale farmers, our lives are full and our profits marginal.
If you've already been an apprentice but didn't experience planning and
decision-making, this may be the opportunity for you. If you've worked on
a farm but never got to really learn the farming system, this may be the
experience you're looking for. Most folks who work here after apprenticing
elsewhere, say a season with us has made a real difference in their
knowledge and confidence levels. This year, because of El Nino, our
harvest starts in May and goes through Thanksgiving. We are looking for
someone who can commit to the full season.
We can offer you room, some shared meals, veggies and staples, all the work
you can do, all the knowledge you want to glean, and a small weekly stipend.
To apply, write us. Tell us a bit about you, your experience, dreams and
expectations -- what you'd like to contribute, what you want to learn, what
you need to be comfortable, and your availability.
