Thanks for all the great replies to my original post in which I
suggested not using the word "farm" because of its historical origins
meaning a financial payment obligation for rented land.

I hope that some of the people who replied to me directly will also
reply to the listserve because your comments were so helpful.

I've chosen not to use "farm" as my preferred term and I still respect
those who do. As a Californian and Permaculturist, I like to be at the
progressive leading edge of eco-consciousness. Some folks are more
comfortable with a more conservative approach.

My choice is aimed at questioning our essential relationship with the
earth, and this is really the one underlying question of all life. If we
don't question it, we will experience more of the same degradation we
learn about every day. Someone wrote that the significance of the word
"salary" as deriving from salt as payment wasn't that important. On the
contrary, I believe that the awareness of salt's true preciousness would
limit the abusive ecological practices which are used to manufacture
salt as a cheap commodity (Note the Japanese project in Mexico near the
Scammons Lagoon Grey whale winter calving sites).

Anyway, thanks again and I'm happy to continue the discussion.

Earth blessings,
Akiva
