FYI ... Thought some might be interested in signing up for this free email
"newsletter" from Successful Farming. I think it's weekly. For me, it's a
brief way of catching up on some issues concerning a more "conventional"
farmer audience.

Directions to sign up are at the bottom of this issue.

>Acreage mystery continues
>
>Confusion about acreage numbers has put fear in the futures markets.
>"Many acreage numbers released on Tuesday morning were less than
>analysts expected, except perhaps for cotton and durum wheat," says Ron
>Mortensen, @g Online markets contributor. Fear and confusion still
>exist, he says. The upshot is that demand surprises are becoming less
>likely. Weather surprises are about the only thing that will move the
>market sharply higher now.

>Zeneca, Monsanto make major moves

>Zeneca is going ahead with an $85 million investment in a herbicide
>plant in China. The plant will make paraquat, the active ingredient in
>Gramoxone.... Monsanto is investing $17.2 million in a genetics research
>firm, GeneTrace. Technology from the venture will be used in improving
>crops, including corn and soybeans.... Pioneer says seed orders in the
>current half of their fiscal year are up 12% from the same period a year

>Pay for no-till to stop global warming?
>
>Long-time no-till farmer Jim Kinsella of Illinois has proposed a new
>farm policy based on practices that capture greenhouse gases. Under the
>plan, farmers would be paid for building up soil humus and maintaining
>it at high levels, thus helping to prevent global warming from buildup
>of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The concept may need to be
>broadened and refined--no-till farmers aren’t alone in working to
>restore native soil fertility says Dan Looker, Business Editor for
>Successful Farming. But Looker says Kinsella's basic idea of making
>agriculture an asset against global warming is sound. That general
>concept has support from Senate Ag Committee chair Dick Lugar and Deputy
>Ag Secretary Richard Rominger.

>USDA to improve agriculture's 'safety net'
>
>Ag Secretary Dan Glickman Thursday announced a series of steps USDA
>plans to take to improve the so-called safety net for the ag industry.
>He said the initiatives are aimed at making it easier to expand
>insurance to new crops and new areas, moderating insurance rate
>adjustments, developing a pilot program to give farmers increased
>protection and a re-examination of USDA's prevented planting coverage.
>The initiatives should be effective for the 1999 crop, according to a
>USDA press release.

>Europe's farmers ready to play rough
>
>Police held angry farmers at bay outside the European Union's Brussels
>headquarters this week, where policymakers were framing plans for launch
>of the euro dollar and big cuts in farm subsidies to help fund expansion
>of the EU. While these grand plans were being considered, ag ministers
>meeting in the same building delivered a near-unanimous rejection of
>farm reform proposals. "Perhaps more than any other group, European
>Union farmers have proved they are prepared to play rough if they
>disagree with the world as created by Brussels," according to a Reuters
>report this week.

>Combine grain flow dynamics confound yield maps
>
>The dynamics of grain flowing through a combine at harvest may make it
>difficult to identify just where the grain was harvested, a problem in
>trying to map yields. In an ARDC study, a cup of soybeans was spray
>painted, placed in a small bag, and stapled to plants so they would be
>taken into the combine at one time. Some of the soybeans entered the
>grain tank directly in 8 seconds, some traveled to the separation area
>with the pods, then to the clean grain auger, and then to the grain tank
>taking 15 to 20 seconds, others passed through re-threshing and hit the
>grain tank in about 30 seconds. The findings demonstrate that a point of
>harvest in the field may be recorded by the yield monitor over a period
>of 25 seconds over 100 feet of travel. The study showed similar findings
>for corn harvesting. However, yield maps still give an important
>indication of yield variability in areas of fields, say the researchers.

>How early will you plant corn?
>
>A South Dakota farmer gets the ball rolling, pointing out: "In my short
>seven-year career I can honestly say I've never seen early corn beat by
>later corn, no matter what conditions the early corn was planted into.
>I've even had corn frozen off that was my top yielder (growing point was
>below the surface) for the year. Among the replies: "I think every year
>is different and each has it's own 'right' planting window." And this
>posting from central Illinois to make you antsy: "I have heard corn is
>already in the ground thirty miles west in the Mississippi bottoms."
