Howdy, all--

Thought this posting to ProMED might interest some of you. Related
to my posting the other day about the effects of antibiotic use in
ag.

What interests me is Bayer AG's statement. It basically says, use
of antibiotics leads to resist stance. Though it qualifies that--
"wrongful" use and "may". This would seem to me to pose some stiff
strategic planning challenges for a business engaged in antibiotic
production. Never mind the ethical challenges.

Petaling Jaya: The manufacturer of Ciprofloxacin has warned that this
product was to be used on humans only.

In a statement issued here yesterday, Bayer AG said the antibiotic
should not be used on chickens.

"The wrongful use of any antibiotic on poultry and livestock may lead
to cross-resistances which render the antibiotic ineffective against
human infection," it said.

Last week, the authorities seized counterfeit antibiotics from chicken
breeders in Negri Sembilan.

The breeders [were] believed to be injecting chickens with the
antibiotic.
