Donna,
I suggest you contact Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant at
cavanaughd@ces.aces.uiuc.edu. As an Illinois state sustainable agriculture
coordinator for the North Central Region SARE program, she is well-connected
to the sustainable ag "network" in Illinois, and very active in
sustainability issues. This summer, Deborah and the NCR SARE regional
training program will be holding a sustainable agriculture workshop in St.
Charles, Illinois.
As far as other sustainable agriculture projects in Illinois, the SARE
program has funded a variety of projects across the state, from biological
control of nematodes in corn to establishing integrated crop and livestock
systems. I would be happy to fax you that list if you are interested. We
have not funded any projects in Illinois (or anywhere else, for that matter)
dealing with "conventional" hog confinement. We *have* been active in
funding alternative hog production systems across the region, such as hoop
houses, deep-bedded Swedish-style systems, and pastured hog systems.
Let me know if I can provide you with further information.
Thanks for your inquiry!
Regards,
Lisa
