Sanet:

The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is requesting comments on its
new and revised program statements. The statements are on the web at

http://www.ars.usda.gov/nps/programs/

As you can read in the *Transmittal Letter*
(http://www.ars.usda.gov/nps/programs/murrell.htm):

_____________
"...the decision was made to organize over 1,100 research projects into 25
new National Programs based on their relationship to U.S. priorities in
agriculture and nutrition. In addition, we have reorganized the National
Program Staff into three broad research areas:

Animal Production, Product Value, and Safety
Natural Resources and Sustainable Agricultural Systems
Crop Production, Product Value, and Safety

Comments Must Be Received By Close of Business April 30, 1998"
______________

The web pages are set up to review and then comment on the *short* (2-pager)
program statements, and/or you can view the full program statement (10-p.)
(scroll all the way down the page on any of the short statements).

To quote again from the Transmittal letter from Darwin Murrell, Deputy
Administrator of ARS:

____
"Recent changes in public policy have resulted in Federal agencies placing
greater emphasis on customer service and on demonstrating research impacts
and accomplishments, which benefit the American people."
____

Here's a chance to influence the direction of USDA Agricultural
Research. I hope interested parties will take the opportunity to view
and comment on at least some of the program areas.
