Howdy, foodies and other beings--

Thought the URL at the end of this message might interest: the 1997
USDA Ag Facts book, on line. It's got some chaff but also a buncha
wheat.

Also, last Friday night a bunch of folks formerly or currently
involved with the Sustainable Agriculture Network--SAN, them as
brings you SANET-mg and other good things

http://www.sare.org/

--got together for a wonderful dinner in Austin. I felt compelled
to drink a toast to everyone at the table. It only takes me 30
seconds of browsing /The New Yorker/'s zomboid ads and culture each
week to feel like the luckiest woman on earth, to work with such
people as colleagues, and sometimes it is important to say that to
those people, instead of over and over to the gods and onself.

And so, at the end of another Friday, in lieu of a sustag Web search,
I offer a toast to you all who are reading this, on the various list
servers etc. In a world full of $100 sneakers and gossip columnists
and set-up "town meetings" and mindless consumption and all, it sure
is good to work with you and know you and get to know you.

Slainthe, skoal, prossit, l'chaim, and whatever speaks the thought
for you. Your work is amazing, and I sure am proud to share in it.

peace
misha

The United States Department of Agriculture Office of Communications
has recently released the latest version (Adobe Acrobat [.pdf] format
only) of its _Agriculture Fact Book_ (discussed in the May 17, 1996
Scout Report). It is a compendium of thousands of facts presented in
thumbnail essay, chart, table, and map formats that discuss the
various aspects of US agriculture. The _AFB_ answers questions about
what Americans eat and what it costs, the structure of agriculture,
and rural America, among others. Users can also find detailed
organizational information about the Department. The _AFB_ is a
well-known reference tool for librarians, journalists, and subject
specialists alike. [JS]
