Midwest Bio-Systems is hosting a 2-day Advanced Composting
Systems Workshop in Princeton, IL, on March 31 and April 1st,
1998. This is a Level I (Basic Course) for farmers, nurseryman,
and municipal composters. Anybody with access to feedstock
(animal manures, yardwaste, food processing waste, organic
materials) who wants to make high quality aerobic compost
based on modified Austrian compost technology will benefit.
The workshop includes classroom and laboratory training,
accompanied by compost site field visits.
Instructors include:
*Edwin Blosser: Midwest Bio-Systems advisor
*Jim Barlow: Soil Foodweb, Inc. agronomist
*Gary Campbell: AgriEnergy Resources lab technician
*Kathleen Draper: AgriEnergy Resources soil micobiologist
Panel of composters include:
*Wes Adell: McPherson County Commissioner, Lindsborg, KS
*Larry Hofstetler, farmer from Otterville, MO
*Reuben Stoltzfus, Lancaster County Composters, Bird-in-Hand, PA
Fee:
*$295 in advance
*$325 after March 23rd
What is Advanced Composting Systems (ACS)?
* ACS is a "systems approach." By implementing a controlled
process through monitoring, use of efficient turning equipment
and compost starter inoculant--you will produce a consistent,
homogenous, high quality compost in 6 to 8 weeks.
What you will learn at the workshop:
*How to turn waste products into valuable assets
*How different composting methods affect quality
*Why a controlled composting process is superior
*How nutrients are captured from raw materials
*How to control nutrient leaching
*How to eliminate odor problems
*How micro-life affects soil fertility
Topics in the 2-day workshop will include:
*Controlling odor and runoff
*Compost site considerations
*Site visits:
Hands-on windrow building, equipment demonstration, microbiology
*Compost turning frequency and indicators
*Feedstocks
*Recipies for feedstocks
*Testing and monitoring
*Compost starter (inoculant)
*Economics of composting
*Defining quality and value
*Building crumb structure
