All of that is about to change though! After attending the
"Sustaining People Through Agriculture" conference at the
University of Missouri, I have become really excited about the
changes that are taking place in agriculture! Debi Kelly, Fred
Martz, and everyone else involved in the planning of this
conference really need to be congratulated. Not only were
the presenters outstanding, but so were the participants!
When my husband, Greg, tells people about our pasture-based
hog operation, he generally gets one of 2 responses. People
either tell him that you can't raise quality pork on pasture, or
they come up with excuses as to why it wouldn't work on their
farm. It was so nice to hear responses such as, "Hey, why didn't
I think of that", and "That would work at my place!" These
people were also quick to offer encouragement and to share
their own trials and tribulations. If anyone walked away from this
conference without learning something it was because they had
blinders on and earplugs in!
The state of Missouri is on it's way to becoming a great role model
for the Sustainable Ag. movement! The comment was made that
Sustainable Ag. is in it's infancy stages and it needs to be nurtured.
Well, it's got some excellent parents in Missouri! I hope that the rest
of the States will help it to develop as well. I know that here in
Indiana we're starting to get the nursery set up and my family is ready
to welcome it with open arms!
Congratulations Missouri, and thanks for spreading the word!
