WRITER WANTED

We are looking for a free-lance writer with experience in writing about
sustainable agricultural issues in language that can be understood by a
general audience. We have funding to produce an interpretive booklet
summarizing the first 15-years of the long-term cropping systems
experiment known as the Farming Systems Trial which is located here at
the Institute in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Numerous technical
publications on the experiment are available to serve as a foundation
for the information that will be included in the booklet. We need
someone who has a general understanding of broad agricultural issues, is
familiar with basic agricultural science and has excellent writing
skills.

*********************************************************************
To all who have replied to the advertisement for the writer position:

1) This is a specific project, not a permanent position. It is not
necessary for the writer to move to Pa. You would need to come to the
Institute for at least two visits to meet with us and become familiar
with the experiment.

2) Our goal is to use the research results from the Farming Systems
Trial to illustrate basic principles of organic agriculture, to discuss
agricultural and the environmental issues and to emphasis the need for
more research to develop new organic production management options. We
want to produce a synthesis of our research with some inclusions of
other recent scientific studies that clearly presents scientific
information and avoids faulty generalizations.

3) The target audience is that segment of the general public who is
interested in learning about issues from scientific findings, policy
makers and others in DC dealing with agricultural issues, teachers who
are interested in covering sustainable agriculture as part of their
curriculum. Some farmers may also find the publication informative but
they are not the main audience for this booklet.

4) Style will be at approximately the level of Discover magazine...not
as dense as Scientific American.

5) We expect to publish a booklet of 30-40 pages. The time line is
flexible and will be set by agreement between myself and the writer.

Those who contact me will receive a brief letter and one sample journal
article through regular mail. We request that you submit two writing
samples that best illustrate your relevant previous experience, your
resume, and a 1 page summary of the journal article we have sent to
you. Please send all of these materials together by regular mail
(e-mail applications won't be considered).

Thanks very much for you interest.

Sincerely,

Laurie Drinkwater

If you did not include your regular mailing address in your first
message please send it to me if you would like to apply for the job.
