I too am a believer in capitalism. But capitalism contriolled to prevent
monopolistic control or one or more products. A very logical result (and
one that has not gone un-noticed by the chemical and seed companies) of
transgenic development of plants and seeds and the patenting thereof, is
complete, monopolistic control of not one or two, but a large majority of
all crops grown world wide.
The refusal of US Governmental agencies to even allow, not to mention
require, the labeling and segregating of seeds and products grown from GE
seeds will very soon make it immpossible to tell if a specific seed is one
that was produced by Monsanto (or one of several other large companies) or a
natural seed. Tkae GE soy as one example. If the reports I am reading here
on Sanet and elsewhere are even half true, then we are already in the
position of not knowing if we are buying and eating foods produced with GE
soy or natural soy. In another year, no one will be able to tell without
expensvie testing if a truck load of soy beans is natural or GE. What do
you suppose the owner of that patent is goiing to do next year? Or in two
years? It is a vry good bet that they will claim that ALL soy seeds are GE
seeds and there fore are owned by them. Every seed company selling any soy
seed will be forced to pay a royalty for each pound sold. The farmer is
going to have to pay the seed salesman an additional amount for his seeds to
cover that added expense. And guess what? We have one company with a
monopoly on soy seeds. What will be next? BT corn?
All the while we still do not know if any of these GE seeds are safe for
human consumption. I know. I know. Many of you will say that is pure
speculation on my part and they must be safe. Otherwise how would the
government allow themto be released? Right!!! WRONG!!! There have already
been several (more than five; less than ten) cases where GE foods have
caused severe illness and/or death.
Just two celebrated cases that have been widely reported, including here
on Sanet: 1. The release of a seed in Japan with a bacillus marker still in
it that caused widespread illnesses and I think one or two deaths. AND 2.
Peanuts with a Brazil Nut gene added that caused severe allergic shock in at
least one person who ate one small bite of a product made with these peanuts
not knowing that it contained the Brazil Nut gene.
How many other cases have gone unreported because the real cause of the
illness was never discovered? How many hosptilizations is required for it
to become a "Significant Number"? How many deaths does it require for it to
become a "Significant Number"? How many cases do we allow before we becoem
alarmed enough to start getting this information infront of the media and
keepoing it there until the government relents and puts a stop to this
murder for profit scheme of the large multinational chemical and seed companies?
