Hi Hal, I read with interest your comments and would like to offer two
things:
1. " .... democratically accountable government...." is NOT the ONLY
thing that can restrain market forces for the public good. May I suggest
that the "PUBLIC " is an even more powerful force that has the capacity
to more than restrain but in fact determine the market.
2. I would like to recommend a book to you and all out fellow Saneters:
The Case AGAINST the Global Economy and FOR a Turn Toward the Lccal
Edited by Jerry Mander and Edward Goldsmith
Sierra Club Books~San Francisco
ISBN 0-87156-865-9
I particularly want to call your attention to:
a) Chapter 11 BIOCOLOCIZATION
The patenting of Life and the Blobal Market in Body Parts by Andrew
Kimball, Founder and President of the International Center for
Technology Assessment
His conclusion in brief is .."a new Biodemocracy is required..."
"Biodemocracy requires that nation-states follow the example of the
European Parliament and reject the patenting of life in all forms. It
also requires governments and transnational corporations to stop
biocolonizing the earth's genetic resources." Do you think the European
Parliament did this on their own, nay I say the "PUBLIC" had a decisive
role!!!!!!!!
b) Also may I suggest that your review Chapter 16 SUSTAINABLE GROWTH?
NO THANK YOU. by Herman E. Daly, former Senior economist in the
Environmental Department of the World Bank. He presents in brief a short
case for rethinking the results of the assumntions of "Market Forces",
which state that we can grow ourselves out of the mess we are in.
All my best....................Samuel Kaymen
