Howdy folks,
I received this request from a woman doing graduate studies. I have
only been on this list for a year and don't remember seeing any actual
figures associated with intangibles like the cost of estimated
additional health care costs, ecosystem destruction costs, costs for
added gov regulators, costs of breaches in animal waste holding lagoons
and the resultant destruction of aquatic life, costs of the evisceration
of rural America, costs for added treatment of surface water supplies,
contamination of gw aquifers, ad infinitum, etc. Sounds like a job for
an ag economist but they are generally trapped in an opposing paradigm.
I have also not seen a comprehensive cost benefit on tangibles
concerning sustainable organic systems versus conventional agribusiness.
If you have info or know of sources, I would appreciate any assistance.
If it has not already been thoroughly discussed on the list it may be a
thread that we could pursue as well as responses to her at
glee@in-motion.net.
Since NOP material has been a "real bummer" maybe this query can
reinvigorate disussions regarding the positives in our endeavours.
TIA

Rich,
As I stated in our conversation, I am doing an economic evaluation (for
a graduate class on cost benefit analysis) of organic vs traditional
farming. I am needing information on:
a) all types of costs associated with both, this includes both
tangibles and intangibles (like environmental and health)and
b) any studies or accounting for these costs.
We are looking at economic feasibility of organic farming from a
societal perspective.

If you could forward me any information or who I might contact to obtain
this information would be helpful. I need to complete the research
phase of the project by March 1.

Thanks for your assistance
