Hi folks,

Just a quick note in-defense of Barnes and Noble. These folks can put
their stores anywhere they want, and, if all of us still buy from the
independents, both may succeed. I personally put my money where my mouth
is. I've long since made a conscious decision to shop locally-owned small
businesses and pay up to 20% more to do so (it's usually more like 15%.)
The truth is, if I count my time and fuel to go to the next town (if you're
in a city, this could be across town,) I'm further ahead economically and
socially to buy it here. And I tell local businesses what I'm doing. I've
been able to negotiate price reductions to keep the costs at or below my
15% level on almost everything. They still make a profit and I still get
the benefit of having a healthy, economically diverse community. Yes, this
takes some additional effort, but isn't that what community-building is all
about?

Marcie
