Subject: Community service, $ for school, and great experience...
On this day honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and given
that everyone is writing to each other anyway, I thought it would be
appropriate to follow the dirtfarmer's example and talk to all you
influential folks, that is, if this list is still running.
My name is Patrick McMahon and I'm a graduate student in the City and
Regional Planning program. I just spent the last two years as an
AmeriCorps*VISTA working with housing, environmental and economic
development programs. Now that I'm on campus I am working as a
recruiter to help individuals interested in positions involving
community service get positions within the variety of AmeriCorps
programs.
AmeriCorps is the national service program that allows people of all
ages and backgrounds to earn help paying for education in exchange for
a year of service. AmeriCorps members meet community needs with
services that range from housing renovation to child immunization to
neighborhood policing. Currently, more than 25,000 AmeriCorps members
serve in over 430 programs across the country. Just starting its third
year, AmeriCorps is the newest chapter in America's long tradition of
national service.
Basically, individuals receive a stipend, basic health benefits, and
an educational award of $4725 in return for committing themselves to
work full time for between 10 months and a year of service in one or
several of the following areas: education, the environment, public
safety, or unmet human needs. These positions vary greatly and are
available throughout the country. If any of you think that the
members of your listserv would be interested in these types of
positions I would appreciate you forwarding this on to your list or
would be glad to write up something targeted more at your audience and
with greater relevant detail. Or, if you know anyone who would be
interested in serving in AmeriCorps, feel free to give out my e-mail
and web site to them and I'd be glad to talk to them.
Thanks a lot,
Patrick
