Dear Sanetworkers -

In looking through old files for info on the Mississippi cotton fiasco, I
find I'd used the wrong name. Bollgard is a genetically engineered
cotton (developed and marketed under the aegis of Monsanto), but the
genetically engineered cotton (developed and marketed under the aegis of
Monsanto) that did so poorly in Mississippi is called Roundup Ready.
Bollgard is supposed to kill insect pests (and does appear to kill bees),
Roundup Ready is intended to protect the cotton from Monsanto's own herbicide
Roundup (but the USDA has now warned farmers not to plant any more of it).
By the way, Dekalb is introducing a hybrid "stacked-trait" corn that Dekalb
claims will offer both Bt pest resistance AND herbicide resistance.
