Dear Colleagues,

I am excited to announce the Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society's 6th
Annual Western Conference, which will be Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in North
Platte, Nebraska. Following is our stock press release--of course the event
itself will be much more lively. We're working on arranging a musical
performance during lunch, so if you're anywhere within a hundred-mile
radius, please consider coming! It will be well worth it!

The Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society's 6th Annual Western Conference
will feature a special three-workshop session on the drawbacks of and
alternatives to concentrated hog production.

The conference will be held Sat., Jan. 31, 1998, at the Mid-Plains Community
College, McDonald-Belton Campus, in North Platte, Nebraska. Other workshop
topics include growing and marketing herbs; soil moisture management in
dryland cropping; fitting a new crop into the rotation; and two views on
precision agriculture.

Keynote speaker will be Chuck Hassebrook, the Program Director of the Center
for Rural Affairs in Walthill, Nebraska. In his talk, Hassebrook will refute
the idea that increased concentration and farm size is the only way to
succeed in 21st-century agriculture, present an alternative view, and
outline strategies for making this vision become reality.

Hassebrook's workshop, "Sustainable development strategies for farm
communities," will kick off the special session on concentrated hog
production. Members of Mid-Nebraska Pride will give a workshop, "Grassroots
organizing to resist corporate hog farms in your community," based on their
ongoing experience. The session will end with a presentation by farmers on
"Family-sized hog production and marketing."

Registration includes three workshop sessions, Hassebrook's talk, and a noon
meal. Child care will be provided upon request. For more information, call
Jane Sooby at 308-254-3918.
