Positive Hog Article

There was a very positive article in the Lafayette Journal and Courier on Monday December 8, 1997
on alternative hog production systems. The best quote of the whole article is "The big message is there
are several alternatives to confined feeding systems. Some of these may fit producers better than confined
feeding." From Mark Honeyman with Iowa State University. The article went on to summarize the December 5th Alternative Swine Conference put together by Steve Bonney. There are still small farms thriving in the US! We aren't doing things exactly like the big guys. Economies of scale isn't our unreasonable advantage. Brains, pasture, low fixed cost, etc. are true cost advantages.
I don't know if they have the article on their web page. But here it is anyway.
