Crosson-PR (Editor) (1982) The cropland crisis. Myth or reality? Johns
Hopkins University Press, for Resources for the Future; Baltimore, USA;
London; UK xxiii + 250pp
Abstract: The book, resulting from a conference on agricultural lands,
defines the nature of the controversy over the supply of agricultural land,
factors affecting supply of cropland, and ways in which growing demand could
be met. Concensus is difficult because the issue is as much one of the loss
of farmland as an aesthetic amenity as its supply to meet future demand for
food and fibre. Some of the most vigorous public agitation occurs in states
which contribute little to national agricultural capacity. However, amenity
and production values are not the same. Even when capacity to produce is
being discussed, it is not clear that economic capability, rather than
physical availability, of land is the issue. The study demonstrates that no
simple assessment is possible of the future need for agricultural land. The
economic and environmental costs of increasing agricultural production are
likely to rise, but not so much as to pose a major threat to national
welfare. Technology has a critical role in reducing pressure on farmland
supply, and is the key variable in any judgement on the adequacy of future
cropland supply. Timely support for research and land saving technologies
will be needed.

I am looking for this same reference. It has to do with the world
population and food security, as they may be affected by the
availability of farmland I gather from the press release printed in our
local newspaper. It mentioned a prediction for year 2025. If anyone
knows how to get a copy of this study, I'd also like to know.
