Canola, Biotech, IPM

I was invited to speak to the Canola IPM Working Group at a 12/10
meeting in Saskatoon. My remarks address some of the issues surrounding the
delineation of "good" versus "bad" applications of biotech in pest
management and food production in general. The issues discussed will arise
in the review/comments on the OFPA rule.

I learned that about 15% of the canola planted in Canada in 1997 was
herbicide tolerant, and that the companies are projecting up to 30% next
year. I told the group it would difficult for them to gain a postive dump
in the market with an IPM program based on transgenics that increase
reliance on pesticides.

The remarks are at <http://www.pmac.net/canola2.htm> if anyone is
interested. Feel free to cross-post, use in other ways.
