Dear Betty Gras:
I feel like you probably did more to further sustainable agriculture
through the apprentices you had on your farm than by anything else. I
see a lot of discussion in the SANET newsgroup, but very little
indication of getting much done at the level where it counts - one
person to another. Those who go out and DO, and work at their own
farms, even if they never directly contact more than a handful of
people, often do more than hundreds of people who propose regulations
and carry on long philosopical discussions. I grew up at a time when
"organic" = "strange" ( as in, you were considered strange if you
believed in it) and we had to go to places like Oriental markets just
to find mung beans to make our own bean sprouts, as part of a better
diet. But through word of mouth and example, I'd be wiling to bet
there are hundreds, if not thousands who were reached in at least some
way. Passing laws and regulations won't do as much for people as
taking time to help them on a one-to-one basis. Help that struggling
parent with her/his shopping and show them how to buy and prepare
healthy food. Find garden clubs, go give talks at schools on growing
plants, etc. REACH PEOPLE ON A PERSONAL LEVEL.
You know it works, Betty - YOU DID IT!
