Agronomist Josh Posner, one of UW-Madison's most innovative
sustainable ag and integrated ag systems researchers, is offering a
post-doc opportunity that I'd beat you all to in running shoes and
record time if I were qualified. :^)
The program Josh refers to below is the Wisconsin Integrated
Cropping Systems Trials, an innovative, multi-year effort (since
1989) to document the effects of different cropping systems. It was
the first of the Kellogg Integrated Farming Systems projects, and is
conducted in collaboration with the Michael Fields Agricultural
Institute, East Troy, WI. It receives NRI support, it involves a
range of folks in UW-Extension, UW-Madison, private orgs (like
Michael Fields), and citizens. We at CIAS think it's just an
outstanding program, both because of its science and its focus on
long-term, multidisciplinary, collaborative sustainable ag research.
See below for details.

Subject: Post Doc for Posner program
>Nov. 25, 1997
> Dear Michele,
>
> I am trying to find a post doc to join my program who is primarily a
> soil community ecologist who is interested in applying ecological
> principles to agricultural systems. We have a 8 year old trial out
> that is looking at the effect of different cropping systems on
> productivity, economics and environmental impact. Our team consists
> of nematologists, entomologists, soil microbiologists, economists,
> and agronomists.
>
> About 3 years ago we won an NRI grant to look at the impact of these
> cropping systems on soil biodiversity and during these first years
> we have been describing (primarily taxonomically) what we are
> finding. Our second phase will be to begin to work with some of the
> key processes that regulate agricultural productivity (N-cycling,
> soil structure, root pathogens etc.) Below is the announcement I
> prepared and the emphasis is on the data analysis.
>
> I would like to find someone who is comfortable with the statistics
> but also can help us think about how to study the soil community and
> its role in plant productivity. Do you know of any students that
> might be interested? Give me a call if you have any leads.

> POST-DOCTORAL Research Associate in Community Ecology
>
>
> We are seeking an individual with experience in soil microbial/
> invertebrate community ecology to join a team of Agronomists,
> Entomologists, Plant Pathologists, and Soil Scientists studying
> biodiversity of soil organisms in agroecosystems. The ideal
> candidate would have expertise in the application of statistics to
> ecological studies. This expertise should include working knowledge
> of a major statistical analysis package (e.g., JMP/SAS; SYSTAT/SPSS)
> and multivariate techniques, as demonstrated by research
> publications involving multivariate ANOVA, discriminant analysis,
> and/or correspondence analysis.
>
> We envision the Community Ecologist taking the lead in integrating
> the disciplinary data for statistical analysis, and initiating new
> biodiversity/soil health studies that are consistent with the
> individual's training and interests. The appointment will be for
> two years and is available as of Feb., 1997, depending on
> availability of funding. The starting salary will be commensurate
> with the candidate's experience.
>
> Interested individuals should forward a curriculum vitae outlining
> education, relevant experience, and the names of three potential
> references to Dr. Joshua Posner, Department of Agronomy, University
> of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, 53706 or by e-mail to:
