Faye Jones, conference coordinator for the Upper Midwest Organic Farming
Conference is again expecting 1,000 attendees to be drawn to Sinsinawa,
Wisconsin for the 9th annual event, to be held on February 20-21, 1998.
The conference is sponsored by a 30-member consortium with such diverse
players as the Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa Organic Association chapters
of the Organic Crop Improvement Association, supported by Roots and Fruits
Cooperative in Minneapolis, as well as the Center for Integrated
Agricultural Systems at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Minnesota
Institute for Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Minnesota, and
the Iowa Department of Agriculture's Land Stewardship office.
For Midwest producers of grain, dairy products and slaughter livestock
considering a transition to organic farming, the UMOFC can be an important
source of information on production techniques, marketing resources and
organic certification. The historical emphasis on smaller, diversified
producers and market gardenerscontinues, with 50 workshops that include
straw-bale solar greenhouse construction, herb and cut flower business
planning, and a presentation on putting CRP land into organic production.
The opportunity to network casually with attendees from the region is one
of the big attractions at UMOFC. There is also a good trade show featuring
traditional as well as cutting-edge products for organic farming.
