Dear Regi -

Not clear why Kerala can't grow rice - not enough water, not enough land,
wrong climate?

Is barley out of the question? It has a lot more calories and protein than
rice. And the latest nutrition craze here is quinoa, with huge yields and
great nutrition.

Remember that any new food should be tried out on people there before
counting on it - in the great Irish Potato Famine, America sent corn to
Ireland as a substitute, the people didn't know how to cook it and their
systems weren't used to it and couldn't digest it, so it created new
problems.

Is Kerala the state where volunteers went out as tutors and achieved a
statewide 96% literacy in one year? If so, you should be able to achieve
anything you set your mind to!

In the Tuamotus, a group of atolls in French Polynesia, the residents lived
on a diet of coconut and fish and almost nothing else (certainly no rice or
other grain) until modern commerce and shipping. They were extremely
healthy, and still were in the early 1970's.

I trust the SAN experts will send you the scientific info and advice that you
need, but I will be interested in hearing more about agriculture in Kerala.
