MEDIA SKILLS AND STRATEGY WORKSHOP
>>FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE ADVOCATES!
>>
>>Mark your calendars! A two-day media workshop for sustainable ag
>activists
will be offered on February 4-6 at the Plaza Resolana Conference Center,
Santa Fe, NM. The workshop will immediately precede the Western SAWG
(Sustainable Agriculture Working Group) meeting (Feb. 6-8.)
>>
>>The workshop will cover the following skills:
>>· Message development
>>· Writing for greater media impact
>>· On-camera interviews and public speaking
>>· Media tactics
>>· Radio actualities (“home-produced” radio spots)
>>· TV and radio talk shows
>>· Maximizing attendance at and media coverage of your events
>>· Creating individual media plans
>>
>>The trainers are from the Safe Energy Communications Council which has
provided highly regarded workshops to environmental activists nationwide.
The workshop is funded by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
>>
>>Many of your sustainable ag colleagues from around the country have
attended one of these workshops -- read what they have to say about it at
the end of this message!
>>
>>Cost: Tuition will be free. Participants will cover their own room and
board (about $150 per person) and in many cases transportation. Some
travel
scholarships are available; see below. There is a $50 registration fee
(which will be applied towards room and board) which will be non-refundable
after January 20. If you would like to attend but are unable to afford the
$150 for room and board, contact Kat Griffith (address below).
>>
>>Accomodations: Double occupancy rooms with partial baths are available
>at
the conference center for about 20 participants on a first come, first
served basis. Overflow may stay at a nearby hotel, or a more distant (and
low cost) hostel. Those desiring single rooms must stay at the hotel. See
the registration form for more information on accomodations.
>>
>>Eligibility: Anyone working in sustainable agriculture advocacy may
>attend.
The workshop will be particularly useful for those who already work to some
degree in communications, education and outreach. Participants should be
committed to doing media work as an integral part of their outreach work
following the workshop. Organizations and projects are encouraged to send
more than one individual to the workshop.
>>
>>Scholarships: We can offer transportation assistance to about 20
participants. Scholarships will be reserved until January 5 for those
planning to attend both the media workshop and the SAWG meeting, at which
point remaining scholarships will be available to other participants.
Travel stipends will be negotiated individually, and in general will not
exceed $350.
>>
>>Transportation: Those planning to fly should check prices to both the
Albuquerque and Santa Fe airports. Shuttle buses leave the Albuquerque
airport every 15 minutes and will drop people off by request at the Plaza
Resolana. The trip takes 45 minutes. Those planning to drive are
encouraged to carpool; if you would like information about others from your
area who may be attending, please let us know.
>>
>>Timing: The workshop will begin late afternoon on Feb. 4 and will end
shortly after lunch on Feb. 6. There will be several hours of free time
before SAWG activities begin at the same facility.
>>
>>Applications: Send registration forms and $50 per person (make checks out
to the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute) to the address below.
>>
>>Note: All registrants will be sent information packets at least one week
prior to the event with maps and other instructions, as well as the exact
cost of room and board. PLEASE READ THESE PACKETS THOROUGHLY BEFORE YOU
LEAVE HOME. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE ONE, OR RECEIVE NO CONFIRMATION OF YOUR
REGISTRATION, PLEASE CONTACT KAT GRIFFITH (BELOW) IMMEDIATELY.

>>
>>What past participants say about the workshops:
>>
>>“This was incredibly useful! One of the best hands-on ... trainings I’ve
attended in a long time. I’ll definitely be using it back home.”
>>
>>"What a productive use of two days! At the media training we went beyond
talking about what is ‘newsworthy’ to learning how to make information
‘newsworthy’. And then we went beyond talking about hypothetical
situations
to getting some practical experience -- actually writing news releases,
creating public service announcements, recording 30 second radio news spots
and playing interviewee on camera. I learned skills that I was able to use
right away when I returned home."
>>
>>“The training was worth every second. My enthusiasm for doing effective
media work has not diminished even now, 3 months later.”
>>
>>“Our media work had been haphazard and hit and miss. This workshop was
extremely valuable in making me more productive with the time I spend on
media and communications work.”
>>
>>“Great 3-some: Chip, Chris, Scott. Each voice was different and very
knowledgeable. You were each fun, articulate, sensitive.”
>>
>>“Fabulous!!! Absolutely would recommend!”
>>
>>“This was the best workshop I have ever attended & was also fun besides
being informative and useful.”
>>
>>“Great energy, tailored to this group. Sincerity and humor were great.”
>>
>>“Excellent workshop! Energy level and enthusiasm was phenomenal & very
contagious. Never been to a workshop that I’ve enjoyed this much.
Material
presented was pertinent & gave me lots of (locally grown!) food for
thought!
Terrific!”
>>
>>“I’m very grateful for the professionalism of the manual and handouts. I
intend to keep it ready-at-hand on my desk.”
>>
>>“Fabulous. Everyone should be required to participate in one of these
sessions.”
>>
>>“Your facilitation was GREAT!! I really appreciated your energy,
enthusiasm, humor. I thought you created an environment where everyone’s
views were welcome, but yet you kept us on task. The humor helped maintain
a very high energy level. I came burnt-out, and strangely enough, after 2
1/2 days, I feel more energized now.”
>>
>>“Thank you! I learned more in the past 2 1/2 days that I have in the
>past
2 1/2 years doing community outreach.”
>>
>>“I hate doing media work but this workshop helped me to get excited
>about it.”
>>
>>“I learned some good group and facilitation skills by observation and
SECC’s example... best blend of principles and practice in any workshop
I’ve
attended in last 3+ years... presenters very complementary to each other --
style, approach, presentation varied but humor, knowledge, effectiveness
and
professionalism consistently high...”
>>
>> Are you convinced yet? Call me (Kat) at 608/233-5029 if you have
questions about workshop content or would like to hear more from someone
who
has attended one of the workshops.
