More on the Cancer Pesticide Story

I explored more fully the basis of the AP story and need to make
some clarifications, because many people are or will be confused re who
issued a report.

There is no American Cancer Society report on pesticides and cancer.
The AP story, which gives that impression, is misleading. The statement
issued by Jim Wells, DPR, posted to Sanet, is also in error in reacting to
an ACS report.

The AP story, and presumably Wells's comments are based on two items
in the 11/15 issue of the ACS journal, Cancer (Volume 80, Number 10,
11/15/97). There is an Editorial by Clark Heath of the American Chemical
Society, reacting to the findings of the "Ad Hoc Panel on Pesticides and
Cancer" convened by the National Cancer Institute of Canada. The panel was
chaired by Len Ritter, who is also quoted in the AP story.
The Heath editorial and the Ritter Panel report are accessible
online after you go through a free login routine. The Ritter panel report
is at
<http://journals.wiley.com/cancer-wsn/wsn/article/v80n10/v80n10p2019.html>.
By 11/16, I will have both the editorial and the Panel report on the PMAC
website, and an extended version of my comments/reactions to the report.
