Subject: Event Announcement, SARE PDP Annual Workshop
Systems Thinking in Agriculture
3rd Annual
Southern Region
Sustainable Agriculture
Professional Development Program
Workshop
January 21-22, 1998
Memphis Cook Convention Center
Memphis, Tennessee
Program Purpose
The Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Training Consortium
coordinates educational opportunities for agricultural professionals.
The training consortium works to develop a participatory regional
training program that involves a diverse group of agricultural
stakeholders in the planning process. Our aim is to support relevant
educational opportunities and strengthen linkages between farmers,
nongovernmental organizations, USDA agencies, and the Southern Region
SARE Program.
Workshop Purpose
As the Sustainable Agriculture Professional Development Program has
evolved, the concept of ‘systems' has surfaced as key to developing an
agriculture that can be sustained into the future. This year's
workshop focuses on systems in agriculture. You will learn more about
systems thinking and how to apply the concept to farming and training
programs.
Dynamic group sessions will challenge participants to explore dimensions
of agriculture systems, discuss the benefits of using a systems
approach, identify training needs, and recommend delivery methods for
agricultural systems information. The Training Consortium will use the
information presented to assist in future programming activities.
The workshop will also provide the opportunity to share information on
sustainable agriculture training and research projects throughout the
Southern Region. You will have the chance to view poster displays and
observe ‘success story' presentations.
Who Can Attend?
The Annual Workshop welcomes anyone interested in sustainable
agriculture training, including extension professionals, USDA employees,
representatives from non-government organizations, citizen groups, and
farmers. Sustainable Agriculture State Coordinators from 1862 and 1890
land grant institutions are invited to select a team of six to eight to
attend. Participation by minorities and women is strongly encouraged.
Farmer Scholarship
A scholarship will be awarded to one farmer from each state or
territory. Farmers requesting a scholarship should contact their state
coordinator (refer to list), state coordinators will select the
scholarship recipient. The farmer receiving a scholarship will be
reimbursed for travel, lodging, and meals by the Regional Training
Consortium.
Sponsor
Primary financial support for this workshop is provided by the Southern
Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.
