Sustainability and limited budgets

I would like some help--we have been discussing buying a freezer. An 8 cu.
ft. from the local Lowe's is $280. It is not especially energy efficient,
but better than some. In a source book for energy-efficient products, we
found one, 7.5 cu.ft. for $750. It costs about 5 cents per day to run. The
problem is a very limited budget--How can you justify being a good steward
when to do so costs you more than you receive in income or have in savings?
Does anyone know where an energy efficient freezer could be purchases other
than through a catalogue?
I have a friend who would like to shop at a local grocery store rather than
the large chains. It costs her an average of $10 per week more to do so.
Her husband is a graduate student and they have two children. How do you
justify the additional expense?
I beleive that we must become sustainable, but many of my friends and my
family cannot afford to do so. Are there any solutions??

Thanks for your help.
