FYI--info on a couple of upcoming events in central California
involving "urban" geeen material compost use. Please forward to any
interested parties.

Two Community Alliance with Family Farmers
Lighthouse events take place on November 12 in two
separate locations. If you are interested in attending please

ALTERNATIVES TO RAW MANURE
Speakers include compost producer Don Cranford of Cranford Inc.,
Richard Smith, UC Cooperative Extension, and Dr. Mark Buchanan.

Another event is an AVO CADO & CITRUS TOUR of VENTURA
on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 19-20, 1997. The tour will cover
U.C. green waste compost trials for avocado root rot control,
lemon rootstock trial, avocado pruning and insectory tour sponsored by
the California Integrated Waste Management Board, University of
California Cooperative Extension and the Resource Conservation District
(RCD) of Greater San Diego County.

Dr. Ben Faber, UC Cooperative Extension, will host the tour of the
research trials which show good control of avocado root rot through
mulching with chopped green waste. In addition, you will
a) see the new scirotothrips problem, b) a long term lemon rootstock
trial, c) farm advisor Nick Sakovich will talk about avocado pruning at
the Pine Hill Ranch with Dr. Greg Partida, subtropical professor at
Cal Poly Pomona, d) tour the associated Insectory, and d)
hear a special lecture on the impact and control of scirotothrip by
Dr. Phil Phillips, IPM advisor of Ventura County.

The tour bus leaves from Escondidio at the Park and Ride (Hwy 76 and
I-5) on Wednesday Nov. 19, at 8:00 am and will return at the same
location at approximately 5:00 pm Thursday, Nov. 20. The attendance fee of
$35 includes bus tour, dinner and lunch on Nov. 19. Register by Nov.7th.
