*Searching for the "O-Word": Analyzing the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) Current Research
Information System for Pertinence to Organic Farming,
1997.* Mark Lipson. Examines extent of U.S. government
funding for research aimed at organic agriculture
compared to conventional agriculture, and finds that
less than one-tenth of one percent of U.S. Department of
Agriculture's research portfolio (numerically and
fiscally) is focused explicitly on organic systems or
methods. Describes history of U.S. organic research
policy and usefulness of USDA research for organic
farmers. Makes recommendations for improving USDA's role
in organic research and information dissemination to
organic farmers. 82 pp. US$15. Organic Farming Research
Foundation, P.O. Box 440, Santa Cruz, CA 95061; phone
(408) 426-6606; fax (408) 426-6670; email

*Beyond Silent Spring: Integrated Pest Management and
Chemical Safety, 1996.* Helmut van Emden and David
Peakall. Explores how pesticide use and pest control
have developed since publication of Rachel Carson's
"Silent Spring." Describes health and environmental
problems of pesticides, and argues that many pesticides
today are safer and less environmentally persistent than
earlier pesticides. Examines integrated pest management
(IPM), providing brief history and overview of different
IPM approaches. Argues that IPM must include pesticide
use rather than rely on bio-intensive methods. Includes
case studies of transitions to IPM in several crops and
countries, including coffee and cotton in Africa;
soybean, sugarcane and cotton in South America; and
rice, cotton and vegetables in Asia. Discusses
international and institutional approaches to
implementing IPM and reducing hazardous pesticide use.

*Pesticides Industry Sales and Usage: 1994 and 1995
Market Estimates, 1997.* Arnold Aspelin. Provides
overview of U.S. pesticide industry from 1994 to 1995,
presenting data about U.S. and world pesticide sales by
value and pound of active ingredient, user expenditures
for conventional pesticides, volume of pesticide use by
type, and pesticide use in agriculture, industry and
home/garden. Finds that 1.2 billion pounds of
"conventional" pesticide active ingredient were used in
1995; wood preservatives, chlorine and other pesticides
bring the total to 4.5 billion pounds. 35 pp. No charge.
