Folks: a great text is one edited by Allen Solomon and Lea Kauppi,
entitled Toward Ecological Sustainability in Europe. 1990. IIASA
(RR-90-6). See in particular Ch. 3 by Kauppi with figures showing
N and P inputs and outputs and the net effect (+/-) per hectare of
agricultural land. Holland and Belgium show extremely high levels
of excess (e.g. 41 and 199; 39 and 231 for N and P, respectively)
compared to modest excesses or even deficits for the rest of Western
Europe. Very interesting stuff. Real good evidence of what happens
with large scale, high density confinement feeding based on imported
feeds. Ann
