This is not a new problem. While growing up in Southern Nevada,
during and just after WWII, I saw examples in texts as bad and,
possibly, worse. As the son of a newspaper publisher and grandson
of an Indiana dirt farmer, I was trained well enough to catch some of
these errors, even though I was still in grade school. I soon
discovered that most of my teachers would not listen to me, or, worse
yet, would not believe me. Luckily, the Superintendant of the
County School District was a personal friend of Dad's, so I had an
audience at times. We managed to get a few of the worst texts replaced
and taught some of the more receptive teachers how to counteract
the texts, but it appears now to have been a losing battle.
