Institute for Policy Studies Launches National Leadership Trainings for
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Institute for Policy Studies will launch The
Leadership Toolbox, a national series of capacity-building seminars for
nonprofits, on October 9, 1997. The first seminar, Foundation Fundraising
and Grant Writing, will take place in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Organizations in the area are invited to send board members, staff,
volunteers, and key members to attend.
Foundation Fundraising and Grant Writing will then travel to ten other
states during late 1997. Other seminars that will begin touring the
nation in 1997 include Effective Media Strategies and Outreach Materials,
High Donor Campaigns and Planned Giving, and Organizational Needs
Assessment and Strategic Planning. Four more seminars will debut in the
first quarter of 1998: Building Better Boards, Training for Trainers,
Meeting Facilitation and Conflict Resolution, and Creative Thinking and
Time Management Skills.
The Leadership Toolbox is an offshoot of the Social Action and Leadership
School for Activists (SALSA), a nonprofit which serves hundreds of
community agencies and national nonprofits in Washington, D.C. SALSA was
created in 1993 to help organizations and individuals develop the skills,
analytical framework, and networks they need to effectively promote
progressive social change.
"The most effective community activists and nonprofit organizations are
marked by an outstanding ability to manage scarce time and funds," says
Leadership Toolbox Director Anja Speerforck. "Even when faced with
overwhelming short-term needs, these leaders set aside time and money to
invest in staff development training. They know that a well-trained staff
makes every dollar go farther."
Funding for the Leadership Toolbox is provided in part by the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation's Integrated Food and Farming Systems (IFFS) program, and
1997-8 seminar sites were chosen to be close to IFFS grantees. Leadership
Toolbox sites include Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina,
Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin.
