Dr. Tom Colvin and Dr. D.L. Karlen of the National Soil Tilth Lab
(2150 Pammell Dr., Ames, IA 50011; Tel. 515-294-5723) have been
working to develop something called a soil tilth index based
primarily on soil structural characteristics and organic matter
content. The index has been related to crop yield data.
Also, the American Journal of Alternative Agriculture Vol. 7,
Nos. 1 & 2 was devoted to research in soil quality.
Hope this helps. I too would appreciate any information on
this subject.
