A couple of weeks ago. someone posted a query about the Union of Concerned
Scientists, and one of the questions had to do with makeup of the
membership - laypersons vs. professionals. The poster was concerned about
"truthful naming", i.e., that the name of the group accurately reflect
membership, and he mentioned the Physician's Committee for Responsible
Medicine as an example of a group which he thought had a misleading name,
because the percentage of physician members was quite small. For anyone
who might be interested in the numbers, here is what is listed in the
summer '93 issue of their newletter "Good Medicine": "PCRM consists of
approximately 3,400 physicians and 60,000 lay members."
Also - on their basic philosophy: "PCRM promotes nutrition, preventive
medicine, ethical research practices, and compassionate medical policy."
