POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: NEBRASKA RURAL ORGANIZER

Description of Position

The Center for Rural Affairs seeks one full-time or several part-
time organizers to work with rural Nebraskans on issues that affect
rural life, the environment, and economic development. No glory, no
glamour, lots of one-on-one, small meetings, telephone calls. Set up
telephone trees, action alert systems, campaign-like apparatus. Issues
may include state tax reform, health care, school finance, corporate
farming, economic development policy, or others. Work mostly with
people, not much with politicians, academics, or the media. Work out of
the Walthill, NE office, or possibly out of your home (if in Nebraska).

Description of Organization

The Center for Rural Affairs is a grassroots research, advocacy
and organizing group committed to rural economic justice, family farming
and sustainable agriculture. We are based in Northeast Nebraska in the
small agricultural community of Walthill, about 25 miles South of Sioux
City, Iowa. We have a staff of 21 and a budget of about $1 million. We
marked our twentieth anniversary this year.

Qualifications:

The person(s) must be able to communicate clearly with ordinary
people about complex issues (that means listen as well as talk), work
long hours, travel by automobile to small places, and have a
demonstrated interest in social, economic, and environmental justice.
Working knowledge of rural communities in the Great Plains more
important than academic or technical background. Organizing experience
preferred. Must be comfortable living and working in a rural setting.

Terms of Employment:

The position will based in Walthill, Nebraska. The salary will be
about $22,800 plus excellent fringe benefits including health, dental,
disability insurance.

to support sustainable agriculture.

demonstrated interest in achieving a socially, economically, and
