President BILL CLINTON announced this week that he will
nominate University of Wisconsin (UW) professor LUIS SEQUEIRA to
be Assistant Secretary for Science and Education. His nomination
is subject to Senate confirmation.
Sequiera, Professor of Plant Pathology and Bacteriology at
the University of Wisconsin, received his Bachelors, Masters, and
Doctoral degrees from Harvard University. Following post-
doctoral work at Instituto Biologico, Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1953,
he served as Plant Pathologist, Assistant Director, and Director
of the Coto Research Station, United Fruit Company, Costa Rica,
from 1953 to 1960.
After 2 years as a research associate at North Carolina State
University, Sequeira joined the University of Wisconsin
Department of Plant Pathology in 1961. Since 1978, he has been a
professor in the UW Department of Plant Pathology and
Bacteriology. From 1984 to 1985, he was the Manager, Biological
Stress Program, and from 1987 to 1988, Chief Scientist--both for
the CSRS Competitive Research Grants Office.
