The following information (13 Aug 1993), was provided by Pamela G.
Fernandez who is the Project leader of the Agroforestry Seed
Information Clearinghouse (AFSICH) Project. AFSICH is funded by
IDRC (Canada) and the World Neighbors (country: ?) in response to
the pressing need for seeds and information on their sources,
production and technology.

Its objectives (philisophy and thrust) are:
- to facilitate dissemination and exchange of information on
agroforestry seed sources, availability, technology and related
matters among practitioners, development workers, GOs and NGOs
- to focus on technologies, practices and approaches along the
"sustainable agriculture" framework
- to respect the wisdom and soundness of indigenous/traditional
practices and the usefulness of indigenous species
- to serve mainly the Philippines and Southeast Asian countries,
although it also caters to other regions of the world.

Activities:
- collects seed-related information from literature sources
persons and practitioners and through actual field observations
- maintains a database on
1) seed sources and availability
2) seed production/handling technologies
3) seed/plant characteristics
4) agencies/organizations/individuals doing seed-related work
(seed education, extension, research, production,
conservation/seed banking, exchange, trading, etc)
5) agroforestry pests and diseases
6) botanical pesticide
7) indigenous seed practices
- produces extension materials/publication on seeds
- conducts practical research on seed production/technology
_ conducts trainings at the university and on-site farmers, GO
and NGO workers; it also offers a yearly short course (every
summer) on Agroforestry seed production and handling technology
and nursery management.
