Colleagues,
We use Novell networks and Pegasus mail heavily. David Harris the
developer of Pegasus mail also developed a mail server called Mercury that
provides us with Almanac like functions. We are storing flood related
information in this mailserver that is accessible via Internet. We aren't
trying to implement another standard-- just trying to get the information
available in the fastest, cheapest, easiest way.
Kansas Extension's Mailserver is an automated file server that currently
houses factsheets created in response to the flood of 1993. You can
retrieve the factsheets by using either email or anonymous FTP.
USING EMAIL
A two step process is used to retrieve a file using your email system. It
is much like using an Almanac server. First you must send for a listing of
available files. Mailserver refers to this listing as an "index". After
choosing the files you want from the index, you'll send a second message
requesting those files. Here's how:
1. Address your email message to MAILSERV@OZ.UMB.KSU.EDU
2. In the body type INDEX (nothing else, no signitures) and send it.
3. The Mailserver will return a list to you.
4. Choose the files you want delivered to you.
5. Again, address a message to MAILSERV@OZ.UMB.KSU.EDU
6. In the body type SEND filename. You can request as many files as
you want, but you must request each on a separate line, as:
SEND filename1
SEND filename2
7. Mailserver will send you its help file if you'd like. Just type
HELP in the body of your message. You can combine this with other
requests as long as it's on its own line.
USING FTP
To use anonymous FTP to retrieve a file, you'll need to first send for a
list of available files. Use steps 1 through 4 abouve to do this. Then
proceed as you usually do for FTP:
1. FTP OZ.UMB.KSU.EDU
2. Login: ANONYMOUS
3. Password: type in your full internet mail address
4. Change directory: CD TEXT
5. Type DIR *.FLD to see the list of flood files
6. Request your file: GET FILENAME
7. If you want multiple files use:
MGET [enter] and type the names of each file you wish with a space
between each.
8. Type BYE to exit.
We hope you find the information useful.
