Contact your state Senator today and urge them to vote YES on
S.B. 475, the California Pesticide Use Reduction Act of 1993.
The Senate floor vote on S.B. 475 may be as early as
Thursday, June 10.
S.B. 475 requires the Director of CalEPA to establish a
program to significantly reduce pesticide use by the year
2000. A statewide pesticide use reduction program would
change the focus of our current regulatory system from
managing pesticide problems after the fact to preventing
contamination.
Call the Sacramento office of your state Senator. The phone
number is listed in your phone book. Mention that you are a
resident of his or her district and that you hope they vote
yes on S.B. 475. Mention that the bill will be up for a vote
before the full Senate this week.
If possible, also write a letter of support to your Senator
(California State Senate, P.O. Box 942848, Sacramento, CA
94248). You can make the following points:
-- California leads the nation in the extensive use of
pesticides; 600 million pounds of pesticides are sold in
California every year.
-- Pesticides have become pervasive contaminants of our
environment and communities. Pesticide residues are
routinely detected in California's ground and surface water,
rainwater, fog and air.
-- While California has one of the strongest pesticide
regulatory programs in the world, we are no longer leaders in
protecting public health and the environment. As many as 23
countries including Canada, Indonesia, Sweden, and The
Netherlands have enacted or are involved in pesticide use
reduction programs.
