POSITION TITLE: Extension Specialist Sustainable Agriculture

POSITION LOCATION: Division of Agriculture and Forestry
WVU Extension Service, Morgantown, West Virginia

LAST DATE TO APPLY: April 19, 1996, or until position is filled

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: West Virginia University, a land-grant institution in
Morgantown, West Virginia, has an enrollment of approximately 23,000 students.
Located 70 miles south of Pittsburgh and 220 miles northwest of Washington,
D.C., the area offers scenic beauty for which West Virginia is known. As the
land-grant university, West Virginia University has, as part of its mission,
responsibility to extend the knowledge and resources of the university to the
people of the state. The WVU Extension Service, part of a nationwide
educational network centered at land-grant universities, provides research
based practical education applied to the complex problems of America's
families, communities, agriculture, business and industry. The mission of the
WVU Extension Service is to help improve lives of West Virginians through an
educational process that uses scientific knowledge focused on issues and
needs.

West Virginia agricultural and forest industries offers a wide diversity of
small part-time family farms. A major portion of the agricultural income is
derived from beef cattle, poultry and horticultural products. Many of the
state's hillside farms have limited tillable acreage resulting in a fairly
large percent of farms characterized by small production units, a much higher
percentage than would exist in the states surrounding West Virginia. West
Virginia producers are efficient with many environmental and economic
challenges to maintain sustainability.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide leadership for Extension's programs in Sustainable Agriculture.

Support the holistic concept of best management practices in Agriculture
and Forestry and support integrated programming such as integrated
resource management (IRM) integrated crop management (ICM), and
integrated pest management (IPM) and organic management.

Serve as state sustainable agriculture coordinator with NE regional SARE
activities and ESUSDA.

Coordinate training and professional development opportunities for
extension and resident faculty in sustainable agriculture.

Develop a working relationship with the agriculture community
particularly with its state agencies, agricultural educational systems,
commodity associations and councils, working committees, etc.

Recommend and assist in developing a University/Extension resource base
(personnel, finances, library, etc.) to support statewide programming
initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
~ An agricultural and/or biological science degree required with a
commitment to sustainable agricultural systems.

~ Master's degree with five year relevant professional experience
required, Ph.D. preferred.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with professional
qualifications. Other available benefits include group health,
life and accident insurance, retirement programs, workmen's
compensation, annual and sick leave, and optional pre-tax benefits
in child care, dental and vision care. This is a
twelve-month, non-tenure track position within the West Virginia
University Extension Service.

EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: West Virginia University is an Equal
Opportunity Employer and applicants will be considered solely on the basis of
individual qualifications and merit without regard to race, color, religion,
sex, age, or national origin, and without discrimination against the qualified
handicapped.
