While I was an intern at the Land Institute in 1985, Wes Jackson asked this same
question because people had asked him if he had "invented" the term. He thought
not, but did not know from where he had gotten it and could not find earlier sources
than his usage. The Land Institute started in 1976, so if he was using this term
then, it would predate the 1977 conference mentioned by Will Lockeretz (but
probably not the planning for the conference). Maybe
Wes has more insight on the question now than he did 11 years ago, but in any case
that is my 2 cents worth.
