CORVALLIS - Have you recently purchased a rural property? Do you want to
learn about different options for managing a small acreage? Come to the
"Small Farming in Oregon" conference, March 29-30 at Linfield College in
McMinnville.
The two-day conference, sponsored by the Yamhill County office of the Oregon
State University Extension Service, will offer tours and workshops for both
the long-time farmer and the new land owner, explained Mike Reichenbach,
forestry agent with the OSU Extension Service.
"This conference is aimed at two audiences," said Reichenbach. "The first is
landowners and small farmers with 5 to 50 acres who want to learn more about
diverse farming and forest land management practices."
"Our second audience is Extension agents, Natural Resource Conservation
Service (NRCS) and agricultural service industry field representatives,"
said John Luna, integrated farming systems specialist with the OSU Extension
Service. "This conference will serve as an in-service education program for
these groups to help them better serve their small farm and land owner
clients. There is an expanding need for the Extension Service and the NRCS
to meet the diverse information needs of small farm and land owners."
More than 40 workshops and field tours will be offered, including: water
rights and irrigation; nursery crop production; pasture management and
intensive grazing systems; planting and growing wine grapes, berry crops and
tree fruit; managing forest land and wood lots; cover crops for soil quality
enhancement; beef and sheep production; organic vegetable production; pond
building; production options for riparian zones; marketing strategies; and
herb, mushroom and ginseng production. Ostrich and emu ranching and
computer use for financial record keeping will also be covered. Tours of
farm equipment, forest and woodlots, pasture and hay and hybrid poplar
production will be offered as well.
Registration fees are $25 for one day, $40 for both days, including lunches.
For information and a registration packet, contact the Yamhill County office
of the OSU Extension Service, 2050 Lafayette Av., McMinnville, OR 97128,

The conference is funded by the OSU Extension Service, the U.S. Department
