I will be giving a talk on Vancouver Island next week at a visioning session
for sustainable agriculture on the Island. I want to focus on achieving
regional self sufficiency and would like to be able to provide a few
positive examples from elsewhere.
I am thinking about means of encouraging local consumption (farmers markets,
CSA's, other direct marketing schemes), education programs, reconnecting
urban dwellers with farmers. If anyone out there can describe a few good,
positive, hopeful examples, I would greatly appreciate it. The meeting is
sponsored by the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture, who have been very
supportive of these types of initiatives.
