Director
Agriculture, Markets and the Environment (AME) Program

Leading consumer advocacy organization in Washington, DC seeks experienced
professional to direct its Agriculture, Markets and the Environment Program.
Public Voice is a national nonprofit public interest organization,
advocating a safer, healthier and more affordable food supply for all
Americans. Public Voice has a staff of 16. Annual budget of 1.3 million.
Non-smoking workplace located by the metro.

Organizational Role:
This is a senior level position for a highly experienced and qualified
individual. The Director reports to the Vice President for Programs and
supervises coordinator level staff in the AME Program.

Overall Responsibilities. The primary responsibility is to implement the
strategic plan for the AME Program through management and oversight of the
Public Voice's research, advocacy and educational work on agriculture pol
icy, pesticide reduction, and agroinstitutional reform.

Specific Responsibilities.

Supervise agriculture policy coordinator, technical consultants and support
staff in implementation of Program activities.

Take leadership in developing and implementing hard-hitting advocacy
strategies to advance Program issues.

Work with legislative affairs consultant on Public Voice's Congressional
agriculture policy agenda, including advancing farm commodity program issues
and implementing the Agriculture Committee Watch initiative.

Cultivate relationships and alliances with relevant Members of Congress and
Administration officials, as well as representatives of public interest
groups, the private sector and universities.

Work with communications staff to develop and carry out Program public
education and media initiatives.

Represent Public Voice in relevant advocacy coalitions to advance AME
Program goals.


Harness CHEFS coalition to advance the Program's education and advocacy
goals.

Help identify and design research projects consistent with Program grants
and the organizations mission.

Work with the development staff to identify and attract funding for
agriculture projects consistent with the organization's mission.

Prepare budgets for the AME Program and manage foundation and other Program
grants.

Qualifications:

This is a senior level position. The ability to supervise staff, make
strategic decisions and implement projects with minimal supervision is
critical.

Extensive experience with pesticide reduction and sustainable/organic issues
is essential. Pest management or pesticide reduction field work is a plus.

Firm grasp of the federal agriculture policy process (including federal farm
commodity programs), experience with food marketing issues, and the ability
to supervise empirical research projects are desirable.

Experience working with news media and private foundations as well as
collaborating with diverse stakeholders in the food system is preferable.

Commitment to, and experience in consumer or environmental advocacy is
essential.
