"GREEN FOOD LABELS: Emerging Opportunities for Environmental Awareness and
Market Development," prepared by Lisa Y. Lefferts for Mothers & Others, is
now available.

Overview: "Green" food labels are an idea whose time has come, thanks
largely to a rise in awareness and demands for action in the food marketing
arena on the part of consumers. This report surveys current experience and
thinking on food labelling issues--including descriptions of a number of
existing programs--and considers the viewpoints of the main players:
consumers, industry, and regulators.

About Mothers & Others: Mothers & Others, conceived in 1989 by parents
concerned about the impact of the environment's deterioration on the health
and well-being of children, is a national non-profit education
organization, working to promote consumer choices which are safe and
ecologically sustainable for current and future generations. By providing
strategies that can reduce individual and community consumption of natural
resources, and by mobilizing consumers to seek sustainable choices in the
markeptlace, we aim to effect lasting protection of public health and the
environment.
