Basic purpose of the position:
To Provide support and assistance to Cornell's Sustainable Agriculture
Coordinator and the Cornell Working Group on Sustainable Food and
Agriculture Systems.
Responsibilities of the position:
1. Provide Support For Cornell's Working Group On Sustainable Food And
Agriculture Systems and an External Advisory Group (20%):
_ Assist with organizing, facilitating and reporting on at least two
meetings of the Working Group each year.
_ Organize monthly meetings of the "Core Group" of the Working Group
and provide support for its activities.
_ Facilitate faculty and Extension involvement in SARE and other
sustainable agriculture funding opportunities. Support (and where
appropriate coordinate) the efforts of CALS faculty and Extension staff to
prepare grant proposals related to sustainable agriculture to agencies and
foundations. Make proposal deadlines known through the Sustainable
Agriculture Update, and collect and make available copies of RFPs.
_ Publish a quarterly Sustainable Food and Agriculture Systems Update
to promote internal communication among CALS/CCE teaching, research and
extension initiatives supporting sustainable food and agriculture systems.
2. Planning, Implementation, Reporting (20%):
_ Assist in the development of strategic plans, implementation
strategies and supporting plans of work for the Cornell Cooperative
Extension System.
_ Work with the Coordinator to facilitate implementation and execution
of these plans.
_ Collect data and prepare accomplishment reports required at local,
state and national levels.
3. Inservice Education (15%):
Work with Cornell Cooperative Extension Program Leaders, Statewide Program
Committees, and the Working Group on Sustainable Food and Agriculture
Systems to integrate critical sustainability issues, concepts and processes
in Extension inservice education programs.
4. Extension Award Program (10%):
Coordinate a nomination and selection process for an outstanding Extension
program(s) addressing critical issues for sustainable food and agriculture
systems. Write profiles of innovative Extension programs for dissemination.
5.Dialogue Series Meetings (10%):
Collaborate with existing Dialogue Series Planning Committee to help plan
and organize one to two public meetings on special topics, involving
diverse stakeholders in NY's food and agriculture system.
6. Collaborations and Dialogue With New York Sustainable Agriculture Working
Group, Northeast Organic Farming Association and Organic Farmers (10%):
Work with CALS/CCE and with representatives of New York State's organic
farming community to improve communications and collaborations, for
example:
_ Attend meetings of the New York Sustainable Agriculture Working Group.
_ Organize additional meetings with Cornell faculty, Extension staff
and others around specific research or training needs.
7.Special Meetings and Projects (15%):
Assist the Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator with special meetings or
projects as needed, for example a Northeast Land Grant Colloquium to be
held in Ithaca in January 1996.
Skills and Abilities
_ Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication.
_ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse colleagues in a
team environment; team leadership skills desirable.
_ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with moderate levels of
day-to-day supervision.
_ Working knowledge of agriculture and the issues related to the short-
and long- term sustainability of agriculture.
_ Demonstrated effectiveness in organizing work, priority setting and
establishing and adhering to timelines.
Education and Experience
_ BS in agriculture, natural resources, ecology, environmental sciences
or another area related to sustainable agriculture.
_ 2-5 years experience in a position having responsibilities
supporting those inherent in this position and in an area related to
sustainable agriculture.
_ Experience and/or familiarity with NYS Agriculture and Cornell
Cooperative Extension desirable.
Supervision
_ Works independently with moderate levels of day-to-day supervision.
_ Reports to and is supervised by Cornell University's Coordinator for
Sustainable Agriculture.
Salary
Starting salary range: $22,775 - $31,900 depending on experience and
qualifications.
