You may or may not know about the following book which was
favorably reviewed in the 2/9/95 issue of Nature (I have not read the
book yet, but I intend to):

Rivers of Eden: The Struggle for Water and the Quest for Peace in the

Dear Colleagues:

The recently published report entitled "Global Research on the
Environmental and Agricultural Nexus for the 21st Century" prepared by
the "Taskforce on
Research Innovations for Productivity and Sustainability" states that
"A better understanding of the stresses within the irrigated
agroecosystems could help in devising strategies for productive
agriculture based on better management of fragile natural resources".

In most developing countries, projects concerning development of
infrastructure (such as river dams, irrigation canals) have largely
ignored the implications of such development on environmental
resources. One of the reasons for this is poor environmental legislation
in those countries. In one of our projects, we wish to conduct an
analysis of the issues of agricultural sustainability in the Middle East,
especially in relation to the existing environmental legislation and irrigation
infrastructure development. We would be very grateful if someone on
this list can give citations of case studies if any, and/or contact
information relating to specific cases. References pertaining to Syria,
Jordan, Lebabnon are most welcome.
I would also like to get in touch with researchers and planners in the
Middle East interested in such aspects.

Please send any messages to ancha@vtt.co.jp or to the whole list if you
think that many people would be interested in such information.

Thank you very much.
